C6 or E4OD?

If it is a C6 make sure the vacuum line is good running to the modulator on the rear of the transmission. Could also be a failing modulator.

If it's an E4OD then check for codes.

Probably an AOD being a 87 with 6cyl.

My AOD is on it's way out. In the frigid weather it will drop in gear but as soon as it tries to shift it hits neutral. Leaves me stranded for a few moments then goes and works fine the rest of the day(as long as it stays warmed up). Was told by buddy with transmission shop that it basically is on it's way out. 160K miles. Trying to make it through winter and put a 5spd in it. I did a service at 80K miles and again about 5K miles ago.

I have seen this and I don't think your trans is about to give up. It does have what appears to be a common problem with something sticking when the fluid is cold and thick but it probably won't get any worse. My old '90 has been going this for years when it's freezing or below but otherwise it just keep on trucking, and interestingly a slight overfill of trans fluid seems to reduce the issue.

I did screw up and put Mercon 5 in it instead of std fluid. I forgot the AOD doesn't need the fancy stuff like the 4R takes.

Seems the forward sprag goes into neutral for some reason? Just free wheels. Usually have to put it back in park and then back into D. It then usually goes forward, but you can't flog on it as it will slip. Seems the pressure doesn't build enough(or is leaking by) enough to not hold the clutch tight. Give it a couple miles and it works fine.

Still getting rid of the POS AOD.
