No crank problem
Hi all, 1985 F-150 with 300-6, NP435, 4WD. A year ago, I had the engine replaced and the long block was from a fuel injected truck so the shop put in an electric fuel pump. They did it wrong, which required me to replace the fuel pump (but that was another thread). Now, I have a weird problem-sometimes the truck won't crank. Turn the key and it makes a "click" like a bad starter solenoid, but I repalced that already. On top of that, turning on the headlights (without the truck running) causes the fuel pump to get power and start operating! I'm tapped into a yellow striped red wire on the driver's side fender to power the fuel pump (not the fat wire) which is how the shop that installed the motor powered theirs (not that they did ANY part of that job right). I think I must have a short somewhere, but I can't find it. Any ideas?

It sounds like a short and it might be, caused by a missing grounding strap. Very common mistake with engine swaps and this would be a possible cause with the info you have. Check that battery negative goes to engine block. Another from engine block to firewall, and engine block to frame. Recheck and grind the mounting surface to bare shiny metal and tighten securely.
