I've read and read and read and the plethora of info has my head spinning.
I know the old "you get what you pay for" rule still applies, but I am wondering what the best bang for your buck is. I am definitely on a budget.
I am going to be running an edelbrock 4bbl, performer intake, slightly bigger cam, stock heads.
I just want some headers that will compliment the performance and look and sound decent.
This truck is going to be a weekend cruiser.
I don't think rust will be an issue since it will be stored inside and I live in Texas. But do I need to get ceramic? Stainless? Natural and use vht header paint?
The ebay headers are enticing, but I have my doubts. Also looking at summit/speedway/jegs house brands. What is the next step up that is still affordable?
Any experience and advice is welcome. I have read many threads on many forums but haven't run across one on this forum and y'all have been very helpful and knowledgeable with everything I've asked.
I havn't bought mine yet but I plan to use the pace setter long tube headers for an 80 F150 on my 351 build. They seem well built and look to hug pretty good. They are just painted but should be fine here in Texas. Ran painted headers on my 300 l6 and only had surface rust. Price isn't to bad either in my opinion.
I've never heard that but it could be possible I geuss. Kinda like someone saying that Vizio TVs are other name brand remans. Whatever works though. Judging buy your user name are you in College Station?
Not a 351W, but on my '82 F150, I was thinking of running these on my 302. I steered away from long tube headers as I seen some in person on a customers '82 F150 styleside and that thing was a good two inches below the cross member I did not like that.
They are for a mustang, but because they are a midlength/shorty they should still fit in a truck and clear everything. I found these a few days ago when I was looking and I like the ball flange and I was looking at going with something that would provide me with ground clearance as well as help improve the performance of the engine even though long tube headers tend to build better low end torque I have heard I still don't like having exhaust hang below the cross member.
But now for your truck you could look them up for a Mustang as they should fit. I was told by someone that the exhaust shop they used to work at they would keep the factory mustang headers and they would bolt right up to the oem truck exhaust on our trucks but depending on the year the driver side would have to have the exhaust pipe shortened some.
I'm running long tube as well. Hooker 6912's which I like except for a shifter linkage interference problem. Edelbrock 1406 and a Performer manifold and I have been pretty happy with the setup. Biggest problem is routing dual exhaust. You either have to sacrifice the front tank, or run pipes down the passenger side. I chose the latter, dumping the exhaust Lightning style.
For my dual exhaust I planned on using a 2 inlet 2 outlet muffler in the OEM location and have both pipes hook to this one muffler then have the two pipes leave and one head over to the driver side and one to the passenger side. I was going to do two slim mufflers side by side on the passenger side but the extra tail pipe length on one side I was afraid would hurt flow so I desided I could find a good sounding muffler that has two inlets and two outlets and let it balance out there. Or run two mufflers if I cant find one I like and have a mini cross over pipe to balance out the sides.
But I know I wont be doing the "lightning" style exit as I never been a fan of the two tail pipes side by side on one side.
one last bump for the weekend crowd and then I'll let this thing die.
Flowtech, I completed my engine rebuild last year and opted for them and they were the best fitting, most easy to install headers i have ever had. They really complimented the upgrades, and they sound great. The only thing I would change would be to get them Stainless or ceramic, just for longevity. Oh, and they are very wallet friendly. I have a 4x4 and still have mine routed above the frame, you can check out my thread an see what i did with my exhaust.
Don't buy the 6912-HKR Hooker long tubes. They've been a pain every way possible. When those become junk, if they do. I'm putting shorties on it and going to the exhaust shop to have the pipes re worked to fit the shorties. Makes a real nice job for changing the stock starter too!
