1988 F-350 with a 460 rattle

I have exhausted every resource I have in diagnosing this 1988 f-350 with a brand new 460 in the vehicle,

I replaced motor and tranny at same time and now have a very metallic type noise coming from upper end area. able to verify noise at a stop, by revving the engine at 1800 rpms and snapping the throttle. When driving the vehicle, there is a rattling type noise coming from engine area under a load. when driving the noise occurs between 1200 and 1800rpms.

By mistake, we got the timing extremely far off and had no power. But the noise went away. Once we got timing back on track, noise was back! compression is within spec, leak down test was completed. Has new distributor. All new ignition components.

Any suggestions? please and thank you

Just throwing this out there but how do you feel about the valve train, what was done to it on the set up?

it was a complete drop in from ford. brand new remanufactured motor. we removed valve covers, and inspected valve train, made sure push rods are all the same lengths. and everything looks correct.

was told there is 2 different 460s. one for a truck and one for a car. could a car one do this with truck bolt ons? distributor and so on?

What oil filter are you using? Fram is very restrictive and can lead to tapping noise.

When the timing was off was it retarded or advanced? Pull codes?

timing was retarded, and the only trouble codes was for egr valve which we corrected with new egr valve

Investigate the possibility of a problem with the Thermactor System, passenger side at rear of engine bay.

I'd like to be more specific, at the moment I can't remember exactly what I encountered there.

But it was a metallic noise that had me "engine worried" until I found it.

I had a pinging with my 460 that was intermittent. Used premium and still occurred. Found out the distributor was bad. Replaced it and problem solved.
