Heres the deal, i will be getting a 1971 429 from a friend in exchange for some comet pars. Anyway this motor already has an aluminum high rise intake along a carb to match and i believe a set of headers. The bad thing is that the guy cooked the motor (water pump screwed up but he thinks he didn't hurt it to bad) and we are going to rebuild it. When we get the heads off i want to take them up and get them ported. Now i have read that a good port and polish job along with the CJ valves will yield an increase of 65hp with a stock 4barrel 429 of the same year. Now what i want to know is that is this true? And at what rpm would this be at?(this motor will not be used for towing, i need an excellent midrange and a good high range to) Also would it be worth to go through the trouble? Lastly what would be a good cam for these heads?
Yes, there is much hp gain to be found in the 460 heads with a proper port job. Check out http://www.reincarnation-automotive.com/ If you want someone to do a A+++ port job for you ask for Scott. If you want to do it yourself, you can subcribe to his site and he has detailed info with pics how to properly port these heads. Although the intakes can use work, the exhaust side really suffers without good port work.
The power is gained by by enhancing the flow characteristics of your intake/exhaust ports; especially on the exhaust side. Dove heads will also raise your comp by a good point over latter heads, but I think your 71's are small chambered too. You didn't really get to the good stuff on that site because you have to pay that one time subscription fee of 25 bucks. Its a pretty good deal if you do your own port work because he shows you proprietary techniques. I almost never pimp somebodies stuff but Scott is the real deal. I'm running his heads.
Thats what i thought. When i was looking through what i could of that site i saw the links to porting the heads yourself. I wish i had the ability to port and polish the heads myself (Lack the skill, certain tools, and the biggest one TIME). If i had the money i would get a set of heads from him. Thanks for the help.
Yeah, i have to copies of that book (excellent book), and thats where i found that you can get up to 65hp with a port and polish along with CJ valves, but it doesn't really say where that power is gained. But judging from the size of the ports and valves i know that the hp levels are going to be in the higher rpms, but how high and along with where the torque is going to be at.
