1995 Van with fluctuating heat

I have a 1995 15 passenger econoline van. It had a complete tune up and new thermostat last year. The heat only works part of the time. The fan blows no problem. But sone days it blows hot air and than suddenly is blowing cold air and some days it only blows cold. Any ideas on how to fix it? I have small children and hate not being able to use my van when it's cold outside.

I'm not familiar with that body or its temperature controls but if its similar to the '97's and later this would be an issue with the blend door OR the temperature control itself.

Because the temp is set by an electrical signal it could be the control has become defective.

If its the blend door---which is very possible---that's a bit more extensive of a fix. It requires disassembling the inside heater core box which is very challenging for even us well traveled DIY's

Here's a thread that discusses this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...t-97-e250.html

Feel free to ask any questions------we're here to help!

'92 - '96 era are very similar to the '97+ era as with the mechanical heat controls. Mostly cosmetic changes were make.

OP wrote that the van is a 15 passenger style.

Question is, front and rear heat?

Possible causes, vacuum leak at the heater controls? Heater valve control? Plugged heater core? Mouse nest in heater box (seen this before )

And as JWA wrote, blend door/heater dash controls malfunctions.

Thanks Wildman---wasn't sure if the '92>'96's were similar to the later models.

T-Wife as Wildman suggests a bit more info might help us narrow this down for you.

We need a little more than this.............

-In which area does the heat fluctuate?

-How does it fluctuate----fan speed or temperature?

-What skill level of a mechanic is your husband, can he read schematics etc?

Even though the heating cooling systems on an E-Series is fairly uncomplicated it does require a bit of previous skill or knowledge to follow most of the advice we'll offer.

the fan blows great it's the actual temperature of the air coming out that fluctuates. one minute it's blowing hot the next minute ice cold. sometimes it blows hot the entire trip and sometimes not at all.

If your heat is blowing hot, then cold air, it could be just a problem with the coolant level?? Not enough coolant in the system, and the *in your case* the warm coolant is not running threw the heater core(s).

On the dash, is the temp gauge holding about mid-way, or is the temp gauge moving down to C and up to H??

You could have a minor leak in the coolant system that is loosing coolant, and causing your flex-awaiting heat problem.

JWA - I'm suprised at your statement

How do you know that the "Truckerswife" can not do her own wrenching???

I know some gal's that do wrenching, work as tech's and even some female carpenters, and deal with one gal that's a construction superintendent.

It's the modern world my friend

The coolant level is good and I haven't noticed any leaking. the temperature gage on the dash maintains a steady level on the low sid . we put a winter grill guard on before that the temperature gage never moved. sadly I'm pretty car fixing illiterate. and I totally forgot to have my husband read this before he left for work

Well yes you do have a point Sir and I hope it can go unsaid slighting a woman who might be her own best wrench was never my intention. In fact over in the V10 forums we have a gal who seems to have mastered replacing exhaust manifold studs---there's a few more but their user names escape me at the moment.

If coolant level is good and the temp gauge never moves I have to wonder what temp t'stat was installed back when? Its possible its sticking open more time than it closes to build heat in the radiator.

This still sounds like its that blend door or the other parts of that system.

If coolant is topped off, and no leaking.

Agree with JWA that maybe thermostat is sticking or not a 195 degree that it should be, or.......problem with the blend door opening and closing on it's own.

The thermostat is only a year old and was installed at a ford dealer

Sorry but those two facts are pretty much meaningless. Stealerships aren't always the best or even "good enough" for a lot of work. Even brand new parts can and do fail quickly after installation, its the nature of something manufactured by the tens of thousands daily.

As we get tiny bits of new info I'm still leaning on the electrical portion of the heating system. Without digging into that it might be easier to warm engine to operating temp, insert thermometer into the coolant reservoir tank and observe the temperature.

Talking hold of the coolant line feeding the heater core when the inside heat has failed would also help determine if this is a coolant flow issue. If its warm during the failure then we're right back to the blend door etc.
