I have a 2000 Ford Explorer w/approx. 218,000 miles on it. I'm having an idling/running problem that's not throwing a code. It will idle correctly & then want to almost die. It's sporadic but is becoming more frequent. Also it's started to miss/hesitate going up hills unless you kick out the O/D. I've replaced wires, plugs, fuel filter, EGR valve, O2 sensors, IAC valve, MAF sensor, coil pack pretty much everything but injectors & the fuel pump. Have always run injector cleaner @ every oil change. Any suggestions?
It's a Sport model w/4.0 V6
You've replaced just about everything on the suspect list. Do you have any more details about the problem? Does it occur when hot, cold, any time, or after running for some amount of time? Once it happens, does it keep happening or take some time to occur again?
When you replaced the plugs, how did they look? Were they uniform in color?
You didn't mention replacing the air filter. Have you done that? I wouldn't expect that to help your idle problem, though.
Did you put everything back together correctly? No vacuum leaks, no sneak paths around the MAF or other intake tube leaks, crankcase vent lines connected, the EGR sensor lines are hooked up correctly, O2 sensor connectors weren't swapped, etc.
When you replaced the IAC, did you make sure that the IAC passage was clean?
Are you able to look at live data when this happens? What does O2 do?
Sounds to me like a vacuum leak. Have you ever replaced the upper intake manifold gaskets? Also, what is the battery voltage after the truck's been sitting and what does it drop to when starting? Old/weak batteries have been know to cause strange issues, although not so much on a 2000 Sport, more on newer vehicles. Given the time of year though, it's still worth making sure the battery is healthy.
Yes on all but fuel pressure & live data Mikeman. It runs like a champ @ highway speeds except when you kick down to pass then it pukes until passing gear kicks in. Does it hot or cold no difference. Now occurring daily. Sometimes can set through entire stoplight & nothing other times it pukes the entire light.
Shorod, I had them replaced about 5 years ago. A friend of mine is a mechanic, I had him replace ball joints, valve cover gaskets & tune her up. All this started about a year ago & was very sporadic. Sometimes it would go for days w/o a problem. So several hundred dollars & a bunch of parts I probably didn't need late rit's getting worse. The battery is 5 years old one of those supposed "No Maintenance" things that I continually top off the cells w/distilled water.
Well, with the battery being 5 years old, it's pretty much at the end of its expected life. If you plan to keep this truck for awhile, it might be in your best interest to replace the battery and see if by chance that improves the stumble/miss. I've seen similar symptoms fixed before just by replacing an old battery....
