Not real experienced just thinking

When it comes to leaf spring suspension I know it but when converting it in a older vehicle I can admit I don't know. I would like to lower my truck I have stock front and rear axles. Now the previous owner moved the k member when putting in the 289 to clear the stock pan so removing leafs isn't a option my front axle is about 4" from the pan. Just having a idea at work while plumbing a airbag for equipment I build could I remove leafs and mount a airbag to compensate the missing leafs and deflate to lower. I don't have the funds for a ifs right now. Don't be to brutal on my idea haha

Gday, with the heavy duty working suspension these trucks have, you can remove several leafs from the springs. This will lower it some and give a softer more pleasant ride. With the 53-56, Mid fifty catalogue can tell you how to do this, I think you have an F1, someone will tell you soon. There are other things to do to lower them also, someone will help you for sure. Oh and welcome aboard.

I can't just lower the front with the axle so close to the oil pan afraid it will hit at any bump

Sorry, read your post again, need to put my brain in gear before my fingers start typing. I am sure that with so many blokes here doing so many different things to their trucks, something will work itself out. There are at least a few blokes running 289's, maybe their experiences will help, good luck with it.

Either lowering it by using air bags or removing leafs is still moving the axle closer to the pan. Sounds like a dropped axle might work better.
Or you could swap oil pans. There are several different sump styles....

I was going to pretty much use the leafs to hold the axles in place and the airbags to raise and lower it making a down stop so I don't hit the pan

Gotcha. If removing a bunch of leafs, don't forget about the possibility of spring wrap up under braking....
