My friend has a '93 Aerostar 2WD/3.0L that won't start. The fuel pump hums, the battery is new, the terminals are good, and all the electric accessories work. In recent times, it has only started when cold or after a half hour cooldown. Last night, it stopped starting altogether.
When you turn the key: click.
We suspect the starter, but don't know where to go from there. The "ka-chunk" when the key is twisted makes me think the solenoid is fine, but electrics are the weak point in my automotive knowledge.
The parts store man suggested we jump the starter posts directly. Would that make any difference, and if so, how do we do it?
Also, how difficult is the starter to replace? The van is sitting in the street in front of another friend's house. I'm not very big and there's enough ground clearance for me to crawl under there and wrench. I have stands and a floor jack, but I'd like to keep this simple. A simple unbolt and swap affair, or are there any hangups?
Jim, I agree with John. This happened to me 3 weeks ago with my 93'. The starter is on the way out. The good news is that it is very easy to replace. For comfort, use jack stands. Once up its only a matter of two bolts, one small wire unplugged, and remove the large cable. Once up, it shouldnt take more than 10 min. As a matter of fact I replaced mine with a new one that turned out to be defective. I replaced it in the parking lot of the store where I bought it from. One last piece of advice, make sure you tighten the cable on super tight. Good Luck
