Question distributor

Hey guys.. I hope someone can help me with my new problem.. ok heres some background. i have been modifyin a 1939 ford flathead to work with my 1945 ford pickup, cuz this engine RUNS! but ive had to switch many parts, like, the transmission, front pulley, fan, and timing plate, and now its time to switch distributors so the fan will not hit it, the old one stuck out a long ways cuz the fan was mounted on the lower part of the engine, so anyway, i had the engine all cleaned up and painted and all the parts put on besides the distributor, and i was puting it on to see how it would look.. and it DIDN'T FIT! the shaft on the back is too long! the only solution besides getting a different engine, is to stick a steel plate in between the timing plate and distributor with correct fittings and things, so everything, like the vaccum advance will work.. Does anyone know if this will cause a problem? or does anyone have a better solution?
Thanks all for your time!

If the only problem is that the fan is hitting the distributor then would an electric fan fix the problem? That may be an answer. Or maybe a new aftermarket points or electronic distributor would fit.

The only problem I would see with putting the plate on it, if the dissy had enough clearance with it on, is getting the thing to seal. Are the timing covers the same? Or is the problem on the cam?

electric fan came to mind, but i want it as original as i can get...
and yeah im not sure how it will seal right, i guess ill find out.. the timing covers are slightly different, but yeah the problem is on the cam, it sticks out farther then on a '45,.. so i dont know.. im goin to see if i can find a steel plate on friday and mess with it, i pray it will work, otherwise ill probably be stuck with an engine that i dont want
