HPOP Question

My '03 will not start when warm, starts fine and runs well after a cold start. Not sure how long ît may have been going on as most starts are cold for me. The HPOP was replaced 4 or so years ago by the dealer. My mechanic mentioned a ball in the HPOP that was not on later models. This apparently causes an obstruction when warm that resolves when it cools. If this proves to be the problem, he plans to remove the ball and replace it with a pipe fitting to eliminate the problem for good. Does this all sound right?

If the ball had blown out it wouldn't run at all. I'm thinking you have a leak elsewhere in the system or the pump is simply giving up. JMHO

Hmmm...I'd read that HPOPs rarely fail, and now I've killed two? Is that odd? The truck is 12 years old next week and has 238k miles, so I suppose anything is possible...

The 05+ hpops rarely fail. The early ones don't fend as well. I would air test, also check and see what your ipr is at hot idle. I am betting on either a pump, branch tube orings or nipple cup of rings.

I'm about to hit the road for a 45 min interstate drive. I'll check IPR at the end and report back. What should it be?

It should be 22-24% at hot idle in park or neutral.

Probably worthless info, but it's 26.4 at cold idle. I own a 2006 HPOP still on my parts donor truck. Are they interchangeable? Easy to remove without damaging it?

It takes a min. 500psi to start 650 avg. About 1200psi at idle. After that it depends on your speed&engine rpm. 4000 psi is designed maximum
Sorry I read ICP wrong info.

Mucho info on high pressure oil pumps.

Also interesting,
Early HPOP failure and possible fix.

Edit: not saying I think your pump is bad (yet).

Hot idle
IPR 20.7 initially, then settled at 20.
ICP 712.

Check the icp sensor voltage at key on engine off, should be between .18 and .24 volts. 20% ipr duty is low. It would indicate 1 of 4 things, oil thicker than x-40w, icp sensor problems, ipr problems or a tune installed. What was the ect/eot when tested?

Running Matt's STL+
Mobil 1 TDT oil
I have a BPD external oil cooler and have to use a "cold front" to keep the oil warm

Dang thing started hot today, so I can't. HPOP was replaced in 2009, 10, or at latest 11, at the Ford dealer, so I figure I have the new one.
