VA ID's

I know you retiree's are probably setup with a good ID. If you're not, make it happen.

For those us us who did not retire but are service connected you can get a photo ID from the VA. The downside....they don't actually count as an ID card with anyone else. The upside? You can get quicker check-ins at VA facilities. My bride is a DOD employee and we went onto the local AF base for a birthday party and the gate guard did accept my VA ID, and did not require me to get a visitors pass.

Everywhere else sees the VA ID card as nothing but a health enrolment card.

You do not need to be Service Connected. You do have to be enrolled in VA Healthcare.

They work excellent for getting discounts at stores that offer Vets discounts. A problem is that a lot of stores don't advertise that they give Veterans and Service Members discounts.

For Oregon Vets or Service Members 3 stores that do give Vets discounts are: Lowe's, Home Depot and O'Reilly Auto Parts. There are others so if anyone runs across a store that gives a Vet's discount.....maybe we could start a thread for it.

Discounts are good. Maybe we should have a sticky thread just for those?

When I was talking about them not being accepted other places I was speaking of using them as an ID for I-9's, proof of ID at the DMV, and similar situations. People may have better luck with that in your area, but folks need to be aware that it may be an issue. I became aware of this issue this week in two separate situations involving 2 different veterans.

It's dicey around here and it is best to have an official state issued driver's license or ID card (any state) or a passport. VA Healthcare ID cards don't generally have the identifying information that is generally required.

With DMV in Oregon, you can have a 40 year driving record, VA ID, Police (retired) ID, Retired Military, Active Duty Military ID, a sworn affidavit from your birth doctor, a resident hunting- fishing license and 30 years worth of utility bills, BUT if you don't have a certified copy of your Birth Certificate, you don't get a drivers license. What my daughter (Great Lakes Naval Station) just had to go through to get her Oregon Drivers License renewed should be against the law.
