a bit off topic question.

well not really, just wrong year.

my 02 has close to 190,000 miles on it. these past few days it is complaining when starting at 20 degrees.
if i use the remote start feature i have to do it twice.
if i get in and start cold with the key it will eventually start after cranking for around 25-30 seconds, push smoke, and shake like it is only running on 6 cylinders.
after 30 seconds or so it cleans up and idles fine.
so i am assuming it finally needs glow plugs.

what is the life expectancy of the stock injectors?
i know on my 88 it is around 100k miles, and i would usually push them to 150k miles or so before changing them.

and it would be better to install an upgraded injector while i have them out, rite? 99.99% of the time i run the truck with the DP F-5 set at 80 econo.

will the first gen injectors work in my 02 if i find a good set of used upgraded injectors?

Yeah Tom, it sounds like it's time for glow plugs. Beru or Motorcraft only (but you know that).

As for the injectors, the lifespan is really determined by the maintenance. I'm pretty sure that the injectors in the engine I swapped into my old green and white truck were the originals with 270k miles on them and they worked fine. The (white) truck I have now, the injectors were shot at about 202k miles. I have a feeling the truck wasn't well cared for by the PO though. What makes you think you need new injectors?

As for the options in getting them replaced or rebuilt, Rosewood will rebuild them to anything from stock to stage 2 for the same price, so it would make sense to do it once and be done in my opinion. If it were mine I'd get them built to stage 1 which will give you a moderate bump in power (going from 140cc split shot to 160cc single) and shouldn't really require you to do much to your SD in the way of supporting mods. The only thing you'll have to do is get your chip re-burned for single shot sticks. The turbo, HPOP and fuel system should be fine the way they are. It's my opinion that going much bigger than stage 1 (or MAYBE 1.5) makes a bunch of supporting mods necessary (turbo, HPOP, transmission, etc).

The other thing you could do if you don't mind having the truck down for a while would be to box the injectors up and send them to Jim and I'm sure he would put them on the flow bench and see what they look like. That way he would have them if you want some work done to them and if he says they're fine you could save yourself the money. If it were mine and I had the money, I'd just have him build me a set, but that's easy for me to say when it's your money!

well, i was thinking on the injector upgrade because i do get a 2-3 second shot of black smoke at WOT from a dead stop.
i figured a set of clean fresh built slightly larger injectors would clean that up.
the truck is pretty much stock except for the 4 inch turbo back exhaust, 6637 filter, F-5 chip and boost fooler.

I don't know how much of an upgrade you can get on the splits unless you turn them into singles and get the tunes to work with them. I've not looked real hard into it though. I don't think a larger injector is going to clean that smoke up. I'd put a better wheel in the turbo to try and get rid of that. Those 140 splits make good power, if you put a T500, honey badger, or adrenaline with a set of fresh ones and a new wheel the truck will wake up.

i assume the 140 splits are the stock injectors?
the reast of that comment is a foreign language to me.
so you are saying put the new glow plugs in, leave the stock injectors, put a larger turbo wheel in, put the plenum inserts and new boots on it, and call it good, rite?

Oh, my computer just lost everything I typed, AGAIN...

Anyway, I was saying yes, your injectors are 140 splits now I'd look into getting them freshened up with Jim if I were you, and leave them stock. Then add a billet wheel from Riffraff, and a bigger high pressure oil pump, T500 would be cheapest and work just fine. A truck with splits and good tunes will for sure gain power with the hpop upgrade. The stock one just isn't enough on a tuned truck, you can ask Jim that if you talk with him. I've done a few trucks like yours and that's basically what I do. If you switch to single shot injectors, there can be issues with tuning that take a little time to work out, may or may not be "plug and play". If you stay with the splits, you will for sure have no tuning issues.

So I'm saying freshen the injectors, T500 or the like, billet wheel in the turbo, plenum inserts and boots, and glow plugs.

You bet Tom. Everything but injector work for around that 1000.

Do you have any particular goals in mind? Before buying parts, it's good to have a goal or objective.

I replaced the injectors on my 02 at 300k because I was at 300k. I saw absolutely no improvement in performance or fuel economy after the swap.

What color smoke are you getting at start up? A bunch (bunch) of white smoke can mean glow plugs. Otherwise it could be worn injectors.

Split shots have a smoother idle and are quieter in the cold. Single shots are easier to make more power with. Black smoke while getting on it is a result of tuning.

T500, Honeybadger, Adrenaline, are code words that hint you should check in on the technical forums a little more often (but if you go with stage 1 singes with your stock 17° you shouldn't need any of that)

I thought stock SD injectors were 120s? Or is that the Cali model OBS?

I thought OBS inj were 98cc single shot and the stock feminine body style (FBS) trucks were 138 splits? Anyway, I have a friend with 450,XXX on his stock inj. FBS. He never takes off without warming it up, plugs it in for a while this time of year and always has run Rotella T since he brought her home from the dealer.

I run stock injectors with a 120 Volt IDM on one truck and a 140 volt on another with a 110 on the 12' until I can get them bumped to 140 and you can tell the difference.

I ohm'ed out my glow plugs on the 12' and all were within specs but when I pulled them after I broke a inj. hold down bolt three of the "within spec' glow plugs would not get past warm with jumper cables hooked to a battery. The other 5 were good if IRCC. I would try the cheaper fixes myself before inj. and then have them checked like "DIY MECH>" suggested.

Most likely ad code 140 splits.

I just worked on a coworkers SD at like 120000 and his gp s were fine but his gp relay was dropping 7v across it.replaced it and it fires like a new truck at 15* not plugged in.
Just food for thought.

Tom, I'm not saying you need injector work either, but if it were me, I'd still have them checked means you are getting in there. That's up to you though.
