Looking to flush my power steering on my 2010 FX4 Screw have looked on youtube and found several ways on cars but no good ones for trucks, plus some say to drain from the low pressure side and start the truck to push out fluid. Wouldn't this harm the dry pump? Any DIY videos or step by step on here that anyone knows about? I looked but nothing came up, then again I'm not real good with the search either. Present fluid is very black and have 120K on the truck.
I asked the same question a while ago and got no answer. My plan of attack, not yet implemented, is to cap off the low pressure return port on the power steering pump, route the return hose to a bucket and spin the pump and add fluid as needed to keep the level up. Once I get good color in the fluid returning I'll stop and button things up.
as a rule of thumb I remove p.s.fluid from reservoir, then remove return return hose to reservoir & put in a bucket, then start adding p.s. fluid when engine is started, dont run dry,it takes two people, have helper ready to turn engine off if you fall behind with adding fluid also turn steering lock to lock to clean out steering gear box/rack& pinnion.while flushing. Some trucks have a more specific procedure.maybe a search in the forum specific to your truck.
IMHO...this is what I do......I disconnect the pump return line at the reservoir....and extend it into a bucket....I plug off the fitting at the reservoir where it previously connected.....with the lid off the reservoir, my wife starts the engine, and turns the wheel as I fill the reservoir never allowing the pump to run dry....done in about 5 minutes..............
