Purchasing 2001 F150 XLT
I am seriously considering buying a 2001 F150 XLT 2X4 Ext Cab SB.
I am trying to decide between the 4.2 V6 and the 4.6 V8. I am not doing any heavy hauling or towing, but I do want to be able to get on an interstate on-ramp without having to get out and push . I will be making long trips occasionally so milage is a factor.
What is the performance/mpg differences between these 2 engines?
If I get the 4.2, what performance gains can I expect with a cold air intake and a cat back exhaust?
Is it possible to get this truck for about $15000?
I am also considering the 2000 model of the same truck. The features appear to be the same for both 2000 and 2001.
I read somewhere that the XLT has 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, can someone confirm this?
Thanks for the help

The price should be doable. I gave $20,500 for my 2001 xlt OffRoad 4x4 S/C with 26,400 miles on it. It was a lease return at my local dealer. I love it!!
Mine does have 4-wheel disc w/ anti-lock.
My 4x4 averages 14mpg around town. A 2 wheel drive will do better.
Go for the 2001 if you can, newer is always better.
Jimmy
I hope I can find a 2001 in my price range. If not, I may have to step down to a 2000. Do you by chance know if the 2000 has 4 wheel disc ABS brakes?

Some times I haul a trailer with a John Deere front end mower with the weedeater, headge trimmer, blower, and rack and the back end doesn't go down a bit and also carry a 4wheller in the back of my truck at times and it does great...I also have a 5.4L V8 in my other 97 it is 4x4 and the gas mileage is pretty good about 15 city and 17 highway..
17 city and 19 to 20 highway on the 2wd.....
.But all and all the v8 4.6L is a good engine and they do last a good time I have seen one with 203,000 miles on it still running. Those engines give you about 200,000 maybe 180,000 just depends on how much you take care of it and what you haul you know...
My 2wd has 107,000 on it and my 4x4 has 70,000 and both still run great....
I think the 01's also have a V8 5.4L Bi-Fuel ENGINE...
Is it possible to get the 01 for 15,000??Yes but you would probely have a better shot at a lower price if you just got an XLT and not A Lariat...
Here are a few questions to ask
Mileage?
Lariat,XLT,XL,?
Bed Liner?
Multi Disc Cd-Player,
How well the truck is.
Have tires been moded?
How many miles are u looking for to be on it???
My cousin bought an Extended Cab 4.6L V8 1998 F-150 a few months ago for 10,000...with 86,000 miles on it
also the V6 4.2L is ok for 2wd if you want good gas mileage and won't be towing much but the evey day things or towing nothing at all...But it's worth spending the money on the 4.6L V8
But if you want the extra power on the freeway like you said. The 4.6l V8 is great it has alot more power then you think and it's better on gas then the 5.4....Of couse the 4.2L V6 would be the best on gas but the 4.6L v8 is the best bet I think..
Good luck on the buy..

As for the questions.
I figure with good maintenance (and not doing burn-outs every light) I could get about 22 mpg with the 4.6
It is definitely the XLT, it has everything I want
Bed Liner is optional, I plan to Line-X the thing anyway (if it has not been done)
No Multi Disc CD-Player, I prefer an after market CD\MP3 player.
For a 2001, I do not expect it to look new, but close to it. No dents or major scrapes on the body, no stains or cuts on the upholstery or dash
No mods on the tires or suspension.
Mile – I figure 30,000 – 35,000, but I could probably go to 40 if the truck itself is great shape.
I hope it works out for you...the 4.6 is really good IMHO..
When you get it you will be spending alot of time here.lol
But all and all sounds good with under 40,000 and all and Line X is good too
Wish you luck
[B]Hey Jim242002, thanks for the feedback. It looks like it will be the 4.6. Anything bigger would just be a waste for my usage.

sorry Spartacus, but i seriously doubt you'll be getting anywhere NEAR 22 mpg's out of that engine.

Well fx4er, I have a 95 Camry LE which is rated at 28 mpg highway. I keep the car well maintained and consistently get 30-32 mpg. A friend of mine has an Intrepid which he gets 3-4 mpg more than what the car is rated for.

P.S. I thought the 5.4 would be a waste too and now I'm sorry I didn't get the 5.4 4wd. It's not a waste when you need it.
