new to here been reading forever. currently have a 2002 f 350 cc 6 spd and looking to buy an ex to haul more kids football teams friends relatives etc..Looking at a 2004 ex with 102000 and a 6.0.. after researching am wondering if i delete the egr do the remote oil cooler run the diagnostics and replace the studs will that allow me to sleep at night with my wife hauling all the kids french fries cheezits and cheerios around?? thanks
Do your homework, get a scanner (cheapest is get a elm327 and torque apt) and if it checks out go for it. I miss my old Excursion, best vehicle I ever had.
we had a 2002 7.3 and sold it years ago and very sorry thats why i'm looking again. the repairs i mentioned should run 5-7000 do you think as long as the injectors and ficm scan ok that it should be reasonably reliable?
The biggies where a redesigned high pressure oil pump and coil springs up front (on the F-Series anyway). I think you could save some money by thoroughly wringing out the prospective EX with a scan gauge and getting one that doesn't need head gasket replacement. With seven kids you're gonna be nervous no matter what vehicle you buy .
thanks rusty thats funny there. well ill see what i can find is the hpop less of a concern with the new design? the gaskets were a precaution and not needed but wanted to do everything right the first time through
Have you checked out the Excursion forum? If you're just gonna be toting the kids and snacks around locally, maybe a V10 or V8 gasser would be more appropriate....and much cheaper to buy.
I don't think you need the remote oil cooler, unless your going to be pulling 12k+ lbs around all the time. It's just my opinion, but that seems like a waste of money on a people hauler. I would do all the little stuff, flush cooling system, get FICM repaired, stand pipes & dummy plugs, upgraded turbo feed and drain, STC fitting, replace the batteries, ect, ect.
Attention to detail is what's really needed. Watch your temps, voltages, and pressures.
Also wanted to add, if you delete the EGR cooler then you remove the problem. I still watch my temps but the piece of mind in not having the component that causes the problem eases my mind.
Yup, the redesigned pump had a much lower failure rate. The coil spring made for a tighter turning radius also. I like the old leaf set-up on a working truck but it is more hassle in the parking lots. I've had the experience of driving both in the same day and it is a significant difference.
Money-Pit is right also, if you don't have plans for a camper or towing, the gasser model might be a better fit for you.
Back to the 6.0 stuff, if you find one with a good oil cooler (10° or less between EOT and ECT), no signs of degas venting, and some service history, why tear into it? Most of the common issues give you some indication before stranding you, except for the STC fitting. The blue spring is a good idea and can easily be done in the driveway. I'd consider doing those, new CAC and coolant hoses if they are original and service all the fluids and rock on. Given the year model of the vehicle were talking about here you are just as likely to have issues with wheel bearing or brakes or charging system etc.
thanks for helping going to look more closely tomorrow.Sorry Cheezit but i do give you a ride often, i left out nuggets so im sure he's miffed too. father in law and bro in law both had turbo failures in their 6.0's so little leary. wonder if i can turn my 350 into an ex???
