I just drained 3 gallons of coffee colored goo from my wifes 02 mountaineer crank case. looking for a motor I am getting migraines because the salvage guys say there were alot of changes from year to year in the early 4.6L that are not interchangeable. Can anyone help me decypher this BS. What is the simplest way to match up what I need? Vin Number? is there a code some where? or do I need to track down an exact replica of my wifes truck?
Thanks for the help.
See if your library has a copy of Hollander Interchange. You might need to find a larger regional library. Hollander Interchange will tell you what interchanges and in some cases, it will tell you what changes you might need to make if you use an engine from a different year. For example (illustrative purposes only, I'm not saying it will work), you might be able to use an engine from a 2004 if you strip it down to a long block and use all the 2002 goodies (intake and exhaust manifolds, etc.). I've seen notes to that affect for other parts, but I haven't looked at engines.
Any good junkyard should have a copy, but you'll either need a patient guy at the counter or someone who will let you look at it. I've only used the paper version. I don't know if the online version has all the notes. Most yards these days seem to use the online version.
