I went to change my fuel filter the other day but I ran into a problem. I couldn't locate the pressure release valve to release fuel pressure in the line. Were is it located at? My chiltons says its in the right side of the engine compartment underneith a valve but I still cant seem to find it. The manual said I also need some special tool. Is this true or dont I need that? Thanks a bunch
The Schrader valve is on the fuel rail. You need a tool like the one used to change a valve stem in a tire to pull it. That will release pressure and spill fuel all over the place.
Instead pull the fuse to the fuel pump and crank the engine. It'll cough and sputter as it uses the little bit of fuel trapped in the rail. That will relieve the pressure in the line. You also need to open the tank filler caps to vent residual pressure in the tanks.
Either way, you're going to need a special tool for the garter spring connectors at the filter and you'll spill a bunch of fuel changing it. No way to do it cleanly.
That special tool will help, but will be tough to use, I would suggerst going to the dealer and buying the clips, as I have messed up mofr than a few using the tools, I have both the plastic rings and the scisor looking tool, neither makes it too much easier.
I'll try one of those and I should be able to figure it out. Just pulling the fuse seems about the easiest if I can get it to work. I bought one of those metal scissor lookin thingy at napa. The end is cylindar shaped and goes over the fuel line and must push against something on the filter to take it off. Sounds like it might be a PITA but oh well. I'll see if I can get it done in the next few days. Problem is, I lost all the stuff I bough. Probably around the house somewere
Thanks for all the help guys, I dont know what I would do without you
>I usually disconnect the inertia switch on the passanger
>side right pannel.
>This de-energizes the fuel pump.
>I have a 1996 f150 ext. cab 302 v8

That's what I do... then I crank it a couple of times... works like a charm...
