please help me...my 79 f-150still sounds like it is on even after the motor has been turned. it is not as loud as if it were on but it sounds maybe like a fuel system. any advice for me ?? also does anyone have a wiring manual for this year?? i would really appeciate it! thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this
Yea, is it coughing and sputtering (trying to run but failing) or are you hearing a whirring sound like an electric fuel pump, electric fan or something?

The coughing and sputtering is called dieseling. Try reducing the idle speed. Should be a little set screw on the throttle linkage on the driver's side of the carb. You may have to remove the air cleaner to see it. If the idle speed is too high the motor sucks in a little gas and the heat of compression ignites it.
On a 79 there might also be a dash pot that opens the throttle to idle during run and closes the throttle blades completely when the engine is turned off. Look for a cylindrical object with a plunger that acts as a throttle stop on the driver's side of the carb.
My truck sputters when I turn it off, and I understand its a carb setting. I was at CT the other day and I saw a carb adjuster tool. Do I need one of these or will a regular screw driver work fine?
Might as well highjack it because it seems to have run out of steam anyhow. Re a carburetor adjusting tool, you don't need one. A long thin screwdriver works fine on stock carbs.

I have a little screwdriver with about a 3" blade and 4" handle I use for carb adjustment. I found it under the hood of a car when I was 15. It didn't belong to the car owner so I kept it. Some mechanic somewhere lost a friend.
some times it can be the carb gasket, if it isn't sealed properly it can diesel when you shut it off, it happened to me with a 300i6 when i put a new carb on it.
