Transfer case shifter question????

Transfer case shifter question????

First off.....Merry Christmas!
I posted this question in the 5.4l engine forum and got no replies (wrong forum?) so I'm asking here. (there were other transmission ??? there).

I have an 07 F250 XL 5.4L with a 5R110W my question is this: Does the floor mounted 4X4 shift lever use linkage to shift the transfer case or is it done electrically and activated with the shift lever? I ask this because my F350 lariat with the dash mounted shift **** has the same transmission. I have noticed the F250 a couple of times seemed like it wasn't locked in when I was plowing even though I know the shifter was in the right position, if I let up on the throttle and reapply it would be as it should. It has only done this twice and never while actually plowing but both times after I completed a plow job and attempted to drive off. Thanks for any help.

Also the fluid level is fine and I changed the external filter a month ago and the canister was clean at that time.....( no metal filings just clean fluid) other than these to instances the transmission works as it should.

The truck with the floor mounted shifter has a direct linkgage,

There are 2 different transfer cases used behibd the 5R110W transmission (or any Super DUty transmission, for that matter), the NV271 (manual shift) and the NV273 (electronic shift).

What you felt when plowing may have been the oprn front differential, not the transfer case.

Thanks, does this mean I have a problem? or is it the way it is designed to work?

Manual shift transfer cases are pretty fail-safe- if you had the shifter in the 4HI or 4LO position correctly, it is highly likely that the transfer case was properly engaged. Therefore, the discrepency is probably in the hubs.

Did you walk to the hubs and lock them in? With the floor shifter you have manual hubs only. As where the trucks with the **** on dash use a vacuum pulse to lock the hubs.

Yeah, the hubs were locked in ....by hand, I had actually plowed a couple of big lots and pulled onto the road to go to my next yard......although the road was extremely snow packed and it's possible I was just slipping a wheel, I haven't had it happen since that morning and I've plowed a lot since then. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks, I'll check there first if it happens again, I have plowed a lot since that morning and it has never done it again.

There was a thread on here where a member had a similar issue and he removed the hub and found the snap ring had seperated from the hub. He reassembled and I believe the hub has worked well since.

It sounds like you may also be thinking the transmission and transfer case are the same unit. They are 2 separate units and the transfer case has its own oil supply that needs to be checked and changed on a regular basis.

You're correct, I was overlooking that fact even though I know it I wasn't thinking about the two being separate. Thanks for reminding me, I'll have to service the fluid in the transfer now.
