Well, looks like I've passed the point of no return on this '42 panel. The seller has upon my request made it a roller. The sale is confirmed and I'm ordering rear wheel cylinders today for the rear axle I am rebuilding in my shop. He says it rolls pretty well as is, but reminded me just for winching on the trailer. I will obviously have to spend some time with Axracer's welding and fender techniques. This one is going to be more of a challenge than the relatively rust free specimens I have had dragged in in the past. It looks cold in Minnesota, so I give the guy credit for bolting the housing back together and getting it to this point. Maybe something to do with the fact he put it up for sale in july of 2013! Having this rear axle and an extra hood made me feel this was the one for me. And then at other times I think the made me do it.
Chris, I passed on it. Dunno if the guys sold it or if it's still in town, but...give me a shout when you find yourself in Springfield, and I will be happy to run you by the guy's house.
Just sent you a PM with some photos of the '40 panel (had a '41 hood on it) Didn't want to hijack GB's thread with the photos.
I have such an affection for the tonners, that I'm going to do the panel first. I will be using the set of perfect jailbars that I thought were for the half ton and maybe it's hood. I have a nice straight hood that's in grey primer but it needs a latch. Also I know of a couple more hoods if I want some patina. I also have a nice front bumper I was gonna put on the pickup that will complete the nose on the panel. Heck, I have a year now to find some good parts for the 1/2 ton!
For one to show up, another must leave.... That is my 'rule of roofs'. I am maxxed out on covered parking spots. With 4 flatbeds here, I chose this one to go away.....
This pic showed up on our pages a few months ago. It really got me going until I had exhausted most of the practical ways of finding one like it. I called a guy near Seattle that once had one, but it went to Canada a few years back. I checked on the one in this photo and it was indeed for sale, but it is on it's way to the UK for big bucks. I think with a little work the one I found will look this good. I also got original rear bumper, original seats (such as they are) and the one in this photo has dual exhausts which sometimes means 'small block'......
It's a really good truck. Has an excellent 8ba flathead, but it was superceded my the '47 2 ton I did last winter. I live on a real steep dirt road and when fully loaded, the mechanical brakes spook me sometimes. Also the wood sides on this bed are bolted on, making it hard to load/unload lumber with the forklift. The '47 has boosted hydraulic brakes and the script stakebed.
Is there enough upholstery left on the original seats to make a master pattern? I have to get the driver seat in my 1940 1-1/2 ton panel and the extra seat that I bought upholstered. No one that I can find, including LebaronBonney, has a pattern to work from. Could you post or email pix of the upholstery that I could take to a local shop? Thanks. Good luck with the restoration.
Judging from the photos, what I can see of the seats are pretty much skeletal remains at this point. I did see some horsehair matting. Just no pics of the seats that show any detail. I can look back through what he sent and see. I was glad there was a passenger seat because I have an employee that normally accompanies me on jobsites. The truck might not be here for a month. Looks like I sold my '58 f600 fire truck today, so now I can send the check for the panel. When the '37 sells, I'll put that away for retirement. Then I'll make a big deal about it to my wife so she knows how lucrative it is flipping old trucks!
