Are the long tube headers worth the fight to install vs the shorty's? Stock engine with edelbrock intake and carb. I'm looking some gain in performance and sounds. Gonna run duals with some sort of muffler, a whole nother set of sorting out to do there. Never had shorty's only long tube but the fit of the long tube and issues with starters and such has got me thinking about shorty's........
if youre looking for torque- go with stock manifolds/"Y" pipe and single 3" exhaust exiting in front of the right rear tire.( chrome tip too!). i did this on my 77 F-250 4X4 build 351M/4 spd mild Crower RV cam. if you want HP, true 2.5" duals with long tube headers exiting before the rear tires works pretty good. IMO, all the way out the back produces a glass pack style rap i dont care for.
Like HIO says Long tubes will maximize the manifold and carb as well as maximize your low end torque which increases your overhaul HP. I have used Gale Banks long tubes on my 460 and have seen a lot of seat of the pants increases. Both headers combine into a dual input muffler with 3" pipes and a 3.5" tailpipe. out the side...
