Wow a lot to take in.
I'll try the timing light on #2 next time I mess with it.
I was never able to use the vac advance from the day I installed the DUI however, I do belive I stated to DUI that I was using the EGR. So possibly that's factored into the curve of the dizzy. Truck runs well as it is now without the advance hooked up. I'm just wondering what I may be missing out on if it was working properly.
You are probably missing out on a bit of MPG, although as David said you have have as much advance as you can stand. However, vacuum advance drops the timing so quickly that you can almost always run more vacuum advance than mechanical since when you even think about more throttle the vacuum drops off and so does the timing.
With a recurved distributor, no EGR and vacuum advance in use, the 4.9L engine in my 1986 is set at 14 degrees BTDC and is quite happy, thanks to the OK club members and some guy from Denver.
