AutoMeter Gauge Failure?

Hi all,

I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3 with a trio of gauges in the A-pillar trim (Pyro, Boost, and Trans Temp). All three have worked fine until a few weeks ago, when I noticed the Trans Temp needle falling to the left. Now it seems to be a dead gauge. The needle just sits to the left and doesn't move. Has the gauge failed? Sender?

What does the sending unit look like? If it has a single wire going to it, and uses the tranny as a ground, you can most likely touch the wire to ground and then unground it to make the guage move full scale to see if it works.

I don't know what model number gauges you have or how they work.

It's a single wire sender. So basically, power up the truck, touch the wire to ground it, then unground it and see if the gauge travels full sweep?

The gauges are AutoMeter Phantom. I believe the SKU is 5857.

Do you know if I can just spin this gauge out of the cluster, or is there some kind of mount behind it?

If your gauge is wired like the one in the link, yes if you ground and unground the sending unit wire it should make the gauge swing back and forth. Follow the instructions and DO NOT put voltage on the sending unit wire, just ground it and then let it hang in the air.

They use a ground leaving the gauge, that should be grounded near the sending unit. In your case instead of doing that it would be ok to run a ground wire to the engine block.

For mounting, it looks like they use the standard "U" shaped bracket that holds the gauge in place. You will have to pull the complete gauge pod off the pillar, and then take the gauges out from the rear.
