I don't know if I'm unusual, but I really don't care what fuel economy I get while towing. I tow less than 10% of the time.
I have kept track of my mileage both towing and empty, and compared to my 2005 F150 with the 5.4, my current ruck gets abut the same mileage while towing, and MUCH better when empty. I do love the bigger fuel tank, that's always helpful on the family vacations.
With my 06 fx4 w/5.4 and 3.55 gears, I would see about 8 mpg, empty with just vacation stuff not towing, I would see 15.6 freeway mpg doing the speed limit, when towing I would not do any more than 60-64 mph, trying to tow with that truck was tuff because the gearing and the 4 spd automatic were not where the torque was, often with tow haul and overdrive locked out, I suspect that a gearing change to a 3.73 would have made a difference, so when I decided to get the 2012 fx4, I ordered a max tow with 3.73, this truck smokes the old truck in the performance and mileage department when not towing by 3mpg highway, and tows significantly better when hooked up to the travel trailer, so when you are towing a high profile trailer like a fifth wheel or a tall travel trailer, you are going to get 7.5 to 9.5, if you have a larger diesel like the 6.oh, or the 6.4/6.7 you may get better mileage, but you paid for it on the front end, keep in mind that gross combined allowable weight with a max tow is over 15000 lb, I'm tickled pink when I get 10 mpg towing my trailer, about 7000# dry.

I'm right there with you! the only concern i have being in Alaska is getting out somewhere remote i need to make sure i have enough fuel to get back out of the boonies. nothing worse then running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere with no cell service.
My 6.2 see's 16.5+ mpg highway without a trailer, with my set-up a 20' travel trailer loaded up and my 4 wheeler in the bed. i was able to get about 8.5 to 9 mpg towing up to speeds of 73ish and half of it being in the mountains with 55mph limits and tight switchbacks. I was pretty happy with this considering its better then my V10 Excursion gets towing the same trailer.
0k my 2012 5.0 4x4 with 3:55s out back dose 9 to 12 mph at 55 mph?
I have seen as hi as 14 with my TT in tow and as low as 6 in the hills.
I don't know what your excepting when towing? I remember when I had my 72 f250 ranger with the camper special package it got 7 MPH empty loaded pulling or not pulling, so I am happy with 9 to 12 mpg!
