On your truck it's all in the dash switch. The fuel gauge wire goes down to this switch, and the switch selects either the sending unit in the front tank or the rear tank.
This same switch has another section to it(it's called a double pole switch). This other section sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on the frame midway on the driver's side. That does the fuel line selection, sucking fuel from the front tank or the rear tank.
There are other systems they used, if your valve on the frame has more than 3 fuel lines, write back in, you have the other type system.
