Switching gas tanks

I recently bought a 1984 F150 5.0L V8 truck. I am not sure how the dual tanks work. Can someone explain please?

Thank you,
Victor

On your truck it's all in the dash switch. The fuel gauge wire goes down to this switch, and the switch selects either the sending unit in the front tank or the rear tank.

This same switch has another section to it(it's called a double pole switch). This other section sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on the frame midway on the driver's side. That does the fuel line selection, sucking fuel from the front tank or the rear tank.

There are other systems they used, if your valve on the frame has more than 3 fuel lines, write back in, you have the other type system.

Thanks Franklin2. Does the truck have to be on or should the truck be turned off?

The switch is powered by the ignition switch. So the truck key should be in the run position for it to switch.

Truck has to be on. Preferably moving at a good clip to avoid sucking a bubble of air if the tanks have not been switched in a while.

If they have not been switched in a while, expect it to run like crap when you do, due to bad/old gas.

The 3 port fuel system is very easy to pull a tank line and drain the tanks if you need to.
