I have a 68 F250 and it is continually blowing the fuse for the turn signal. I have narrowed it down to whenever I put the vehicle in gear, the fuse blows. Why would the two be related. I have also noticed that I can't start the vehicle in neutral. I'm not sure if its related. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Also, check the wires to and from the neutral start switch on the steering column. Checking the wires in your turn signal switch requires removing the steering wheel. Then remove the three phillips screws which hold the the plastic switch assembly to the column. Once removed, unscrew your turn signal arm and you should have enough slack in your wires to pull the plastic assembly an inch or so to inspect for shorts. If none found, then unhook your wire loom which runs inside the column and exits the tube on the drivers side. You can easily trace the loom to where it disconnects under the dash. Once you free each wire from the connector, you can easily pull the entire wire assmebly out of the column from the steering wheel end. Good luck
Well I removed the turn signal switch and wiring. I didn't find any exposed wires so I decided to put in another fuse and try it with the turn signal switch removed. Sure enough, when I put it in gear, it blew that fuse. I reinstalled the turn signal switch, replaced the fuse again. This time when I tried it, I happen to put it in gear without stepping on the brake. Guess what, it didn't blow the fuse until I pushed in the brake. So I disconnected the brake switch, replaced the fuse put it in gear and pushed in the brake with the switch disconnected. Well it went several feat in reverse and when I put it in forward, the fuse blew.
My parts store is running out of SFE14 fuses. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Look at the tailight wiring under the back of your truck. These wires tend to get really brittle after 35 years. Also if it ever had trailer lights wired in, it will no doubt be a mess that needs cleaned up. If it is too bad you may just want to buy a new harness for the tailights.
Also for trouble shooting I like to put a circuit breaker in place of the fuse so you don't have to keep changing it. I have several and I got most of them out of old Lincolns ect. with power seats and power windows. You should be able to get one at the parts store.
I actually have known guys to put a piece of wire in the fuse socket and then look for the smoke. I don't reccomend that.
