That's your center cab mount, and an area that is typically found like that on many trucks. Northern Classic Trucks has patch panels for this to rebuild that area, as I'm sure many other venders do, as well. These are their pics so it's only fair I give them credit and first dibs at the business..
They go over the floor panels. So you need to weld up or replace them first, after removing the old reinforcing piece shown above. The front cab mount is at the base of the firewall, under the battery tray. These are the center cab mounts. If your other mounts are in poor shape, it puts stress on this one = cracks. This one is the most "solid" connection to the frame.
Many thanks to you all for the responses and recommendations. I have ordered the repair panels from Mac's. I went there to look for special clips for the windshield wiper linkage and was surprised to find them too.
Many of your pictures show the same kinds of cracking, so I'm wondering if it is also normal to see a crack where floor meets the toe boards. Mine is cracked most of the way across on both side, so I'll assume this was also caused by the cracks on the center bolts. The top rails of the frame under the bottom of the cab both have wear marks where the cab was hitting because of the bad rear mounting arms.
Anyway, I don't see reproduction toe boards and I wonder if it is OK to reinforce the floor to toe board connection by welding a bent strip of 14 gauge steel to cover the cracks. What say you all?
Hey Jon,
If you don't find the patch panels you want at LMC, etc.
We used a member on here who goes by "reamer" - he makes
patch panels, etc. for the '48-'52 trucks. He also made a few special pieces for around the door sill & hinge where were just totally rotted out. I think he's a fireman in Connecticut & does this on the side as a business.
Do the patch panels for this go under the toe board and become the front mounting hole to the frame?
I'm not sure what year your truck is (suggest that you add that info to your signature) but here are some pictures of my '50 F2 before I put in the new floorpan. Note that there is another structural piece that goes under the toeboard. Ross is correct, the piece that Stu showed you from Chuck's Trucks goes over top of the floorpan and should be welded into the side panel structure along with the floorpan.
