I will try to make this short. A few months back I started noticing this annoying rattle from under my truck. I have figured it out to be coming from the rear CAT on the drivers side. I also have an occasional engine light with codes 0171 & 0174. I have a exhaust manifold leak on the pass. side so I assume that's what is causing the 0171 code and my cat, being on the drivers side, is causing my 0174. The truck has no drivability issues its just annoying to listen to the rattle and see the CEL occasionally. In looking at new cats this morning I see I can buy a direct fit which includes both front and rear cats and I can replace myself. Or I can buy a cheap universal fit and have someone weld it in and save myself a couple hundred bucks.
This is where I am asking for opinions. Having never needed any exhaust/cat work I am not sure which route to take. I don't want to spend more than I have to but yet I don't want to save a few bucks today only to be doing it again in a few years cause I took the cheap way today. Make sense?
What do you guys suggest? It's going in the shop in the next few days for the exhaust manifold repair and I will ask them about it as well but wanted to hear what the forum thinks too.
TIA
I don't know what the smog laws are where you live , but in my case .
I had to replace all 4 on my 2004 with 5.4 due to faulty coolant temperature sensor that made it run too rich for only a few weeks .
I had to use California approved cats , and they were $1400 installed including labor with full warranty .
