Exhaust Questions

Hi

I am replacing my exhaust starting at the y-pipe and back to the tail pipe.

The cat came with a pipe that hooks up to the engine (I can see where the old one was hooked up). I am not sure where the other end hooks up to and there is no obvious place on the cat to hook up to.

What is that pipe called?

What is the name of the part that it hooks up to at the engine?

What is it's purpose?

and, what is the purpose of this capped pipe on the cat? Is it part of a hanger?

Thanks for any info.

Not sure of what you mean in the first part of your post, but the capped tube is for if you have an air pump that injects air into the cat for a cleaner burn. If the old one doesn't have that just leave it capped.

There is a pic in that link that shows the pipe I am talking about. The guy welded his to his new exhaust. I am not sure where/how to hook mine up.

Hooking the A.I.R. pump line to your Cat will help it light off and keep the catalyst itself clean.

Show some pic's of where yours ends.
I'm going to bet a red silicone rubber line connects the two.

The "top" of mine is connected to the usual fitting coming off of the engine. The bottom (or the cat side) ends in mid-air. The PO cut the line away from the cat when he removed the cat.

It was straight-piped and he never bothered to hook the air inlet line back up.

Are you saying that the bottom of the air inlet line is usually connected to the cat with a red silicone rubber line? I figured that would melt the first time I fired up the truck after install?

Thanks for you info and responses.

High temp silicone hose is used all the time in air pump systems.
It connects to a pipe coming off the catalytic converter and air is flowing towards the Cat.

I suppose you could use soft copper (like a still) to make the connection.
