painting polyetheline

i just bought a paddle boat, its made out of polyethelene i think i spelled that right. any way, like anything else i have, truck etc, i like to personalize it with a paint job of my own to set it apart, what do you have to do to paint polyetheline? can you use regular paint? i used latex olive drab to paint my truck, can i use it on this boat? any special prep work needed? what kind of paint is best to use? oil based?

Krylon has a new paint out designed specifically for outdoor plastics (chairs, tables, etc.). It comes in spray cans and is available in a decent variety of colors. You might want to try that.

West Marine carries paint to paint almost anything. Since the canoe is going to be in the water I would look at a marine paint that fights fungi and has a very smooth surface to make paddling easier.

If you are looking at automotive paint I imagine "SEM" would work okay as long as you primed the plastic. Most cheap paints are not meant to be in the water for an extended period of time.
