Hi everyone, I have a problem with the front axle on my 2000 F550SD, I replaced the upper and lower ball joints on the passenger side of the truck, I found a post on here that walked me through the whole project, thanks for that post Racerguy.
(Problem 1) I was not able to put the new dust shield on the inner axle when I was putting it back together, the axle has a sleeve cut in it at the end that goes into the differential and I was not able to install the new one as part of the old one was still in the axle, so I just put the axle in thinking it would be fine as the old one was still mostly there. Got everything back together just fine. Took it for a test ride and was hearing a clackity clunk from the front axle, then the clutch peddle hit the bottom of the dash while I was driving down the driveway. thank god I have a long driveway. I started to back the truck down the drive way and the rear tires started to spin and the truck stopped moving, I engaged the front axle to get back down the driveway, it seems that the front axle was not turning until I engaged the four wheel drive, (Problem 2)then my foot slipped off of the clutch, the peddle hit the bottom of the dash. Looks like I need to get the little plastic clip for the rod. but thee rod comes all of the way out of the master cylinder, it seems like a retainer in the master cylinder is missing from the master cylinder that stopps the rod from coming all the way out.
I called my mechanic explained the situation to him and he came and picked the truck up. I am not physically able to do this kind of work any more, so I called him and he is going to fix it. I am glad he is understanding that I was trying to save some cash by doing it myself.
I did figure out what the"clackity clunk" was, the knuckle was hitting the top of the lower ball joint, it was a little longer than the old one, a few more threads, I did not even think to look at that when installing it..
