Driveshaft Question

Hi everyone. I'm trying to help a friend with his 89 Bronco II. His rear Driveshaft broke off and we're trying to put a new one on. The only problem is that we can't figure out EXACTLY how everything goes together. Can anyone post or e-mail me a picture of the assembly either from real life or a Chilton's. It would be much appreciated. Thanks

Driveshaft Question

On an 89, changing the driveshaft should be as easy as pulling 6 bolts from the front flange and 6 more from the rear.

Look at the driveshafts under "Bronco II" at the bottom of this page: http://www.mountaindriveline.com/partsdeptbroncomtn.htm

Each end has a flat flange face that mates up to the matching flange face on the pinion shaft or the tranny output.

Driveshaft Question

Try the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com.
http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiB...3d800f96c4.jsp And if it's like my '87, there are only four bolts on each end of the driveshaft.

Driveshaft Question

I agree with it being only four bolts, usually held in by red lock-tite so they might be a bit rough to remove. You might have to buy some multi-point sockets, usually you can break them free with a wrench using a cheater bar or tube. I usually replace those multi-point heads with regular (10.8 strength - about grade 5) metric bolts. I think they are 12 mm threads ...

If you have a choice, go to a junk yard and grab a regular UJ type shaft from a 84 or 85 Bronco, it should be a bolt up affair and much stronger than the narrowed down neck CVJ (Cardigan?) type affair on the later models. Or buy a brand new UJ type shaft for about $140-$180. James Duff carries those too.
