Blue Smoke / MPG

Hey Fellas,
I purchased my 2013 Ford F150 3.5L Ecoboost screw in December 28th 2013. I now have 12,000 miles on my truck. My transmission occasionally clunks in and out of gear. Mostly in stop and go rush hour traffic around 20mph. Dealer applied a PCM/TCM software update in July. Still clunks... possbble 'slip bump fix' required?

When I 'punch it', I see what looks like blue smoke blowing out of the tailpipe. Tailpipe has soot buildup. I've also noticed a slight drop in MPG. I have NOT noticed a loss of power. Wondering if my truck needs induction cleaning?

Any input is grealy appreciated. Adios.

The change over from summer blend fuel to winter blend fuel may be the cause of the slight decrease in MPG's. It happens to my truck every year.

Apparently Ford hasn't come up with a method to clean things out without doing possible harm to the turbos.

I've seen mine puff blue a time or two but not consistently. My oil level has never changed even during the summer and running the a/c and hauling heavy loads. My oil change intervals are 5-6K miles religiously.

20 MPH seems to be a speed where the transmission hunts for the right gear. The six speed is quirky for sure. I'd just lock out 6th and or 5th while driving in the city.

I'm not sure where you are located but here in the Chicago land area we have winter blend fuels. I drop about 1 to 2 MPGs in the winter. Some is due to the fuel some is due to more idling.

The black soot in the tail pipe is normal with the EcoBoost. Also when the truck is cold it is normal to see a puff of black smoke from the exhaust.

Here's an quote from a web site that explains why we have winter blend fuel.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says conventional summer-blend gasoline contains 1.7 percent more energy than winter-blend gas, which is one reason why gas mileage is slightly better in the summer.

Do you notice the smoke mostly after prolonged idle time or low RPM driving? If so, that is very common

How is your oil consumption? Are you using any?

Blue smoke and soot build up in exhaust would seem to indicate your engine is burning oil. Check your oil level regularly and document it in case you have to make a trip to the dealer or shop.

I don't have experience with the current generation of turbos but in the past, turbos can cause oil consumption because of wear on the shaft seals between the intake and exhaust turbine wheels.

No engine in good condition should blow blue smoke.

Soot buildup in the tail pipe is normal with direct injection engines. The EcoBoost is no exception. Also black smoke out the tail pipe is normal on a cold engine with direct injection. I get a puff of smoke almost every morning when I pull out of the drive way.

Black smoke indicates a rich mixture which is needed for a cold engine. Bllue smoke normally indicates oil burning.

Just saying soot and black smoke are normal on a direct injection engine. There is no cause for alarm in either of these cases. My tail pipe is very black and has a lot of soot. I also have 64,000 miles.

I have been checking my oil level and it has not dropped at all.

If the blue smoke is present after the engine warms up, a cylinder leak down test can give you some info. Maybe a bad valve guide.
