I have a 86 F250 with the 6.9. I went to start the truck yesterday and the glow plugs only cycle for a 1-2 seconds. I hear the relay click on/off. When I turn the ignition the wait to start light stays on 1-2 seconds as well. With the ignition left on this cycle will repeat itself every 8-10 seconds. It just doesn't get hot enough to start like it should.
I replaced all plugs (motorcraft) and controller about 3 years ago. The relay is original. Does this sound like bad plugs or relay?
Sounds like a dead controller, the relay doesn't have anything to do with the cycle timing, the controller tells it when to turn on and off.
What brand controller did you get? When I first replaced an early style controller, (like you have 83-86), I used a store brand. Got maybe a year out of it. Next time I got one from International and it was still in service when I sold the truck 7-8 years later.
