2003 is when they changed. 3 valve motors are the newer style plug.
Two different issues and designs. The 3V engines were introduced in the Super Duty line in 2005. Those used a two-piece design that was known to freeze in the head and require special tools to remove without dropping pieces in the cylinder. None of the 2003 Ford vehicles had 3V heads.
The 2V engines got revised heads with more plug threads sometime around '01-'02 if I remember right. The plug design didn't change at all, but the heads with deeper threads are less likely to spit a plug.

The guy I bought the Timesert kit from sent the Dorman plug that had blown out. You could see crud on the outside of the plug where it had been leaking before it blew out. Not a viable repair!
