I know its been asked a million times but ive searched and googled and come up with different answers, so i need to know what computer/wiring i will need to do make the swap??
My truck has the 5.0 with the 4R70W trans, i plan to do a mild build on a 5.8, and keep my trans.... I know if i use the correct flexplate ( E0AZ-6375-A) it can be done, i just need to know what i need to do about the EEC? Can i use the one from the 5.0? Or should i get the one for the 5.8?
If your current computer is MAF instead of SD,and I think it is since you have the 4r70w transmission, this is pretty much a plug and play swap. your Maf computer will run the 5.8 engine just fine.
me and my dad actually kinda did this a few years back. had a 94 f150 5.8 and the computer went bad.
we used a computer out a 93 5.0 and it ran just fine surprisingly.
I'm going to predict this was a manual transmission. 4R70W is electronically shifted and relies on the ECU for control. 5.8l with electronically shifted transmissions were exclusively E4OD which uses different shift logic. Ain't gonna work!
I've been looking into this one myself. If you want to use a 4R70W behind a 5.8, you need the flexplate for the 5.8/AOD from an 80's Ford car and a standalone shift controller or you can use an MAF 5.0/4R70W EEC IV ECU. MAF also means changing the appropriate wiring and accessories if the 5.8 was SD. Question is, will the 5.0 fuel mapping be sufficient for the 5.8? Since MAF is remarkably adaptable, I believe it would start and run just fine, but you may run out of headroom for high RPM or modified performance use. Going to have to try it to see.
well your prediction would be incorrect. was indeed a auto truck. and did indeed work.
maybe different shift logic but was just saying that it did indeed work, whether it should have or not. a, just sayin situation.
A mild 5.8L engine will work just fine with a 5.0L/4R70W computer (PCM). Paul Conanski has been stating that for years. Even if the engine requires larger injectors, etc. the PCM can be custom tuned with a chip, not off the shelf, or use a Moates, Tweecer, etc.

I definitely agree with that. It has to learn what it's working with, but it can and does. As long as you are using stock parts or parts that are interchangeable with stock parts.
Like he said, if you change things outside the stock parameters for that 5.0 then you will have to have it tuned just like you would with the 5.0
I appreciate the replies guys, thats what i have read is that the 5.0 EEC will run the 5.8, i will probably have it tuned as well, but i dont want to tear down before i have all the parts/info i need! I was worried about having to change the computer, because then i would have to re-wire for the trans or change the trans, and thats not something i really want to do at this time!
Is your truck MAF? If not then this swap is not possible without wiring changes and/or a trans change, but if it is then you don't need to change anything.. just install the 5.8 with the appropriate flexplate.
Yes my truck is a Maf, but now that its mentioned im not sure the 5.8 that im going to build is, if the 5.8 is a SD engine, will it still work? Will i need to change anything??

Reason: Spelling
There is nothing SD or MAF about an engine, the only requirement is that the cam you use has at least 114deg LSA and no more than 210deg duration at 0.050" lift.

Paul, I know what your saying here, but there is a difference in the wiring harness for SD vs MAF in that the former uses batch fire and the latter sequential injection. 6 more wires required! I know you have been through this before and I was hoping you could provide a link to a previous discussion or a how to? My search did not go so well!
Yes.. but Rule #1 of engine swaps is... Do not use any wiring that comes with the donor motor.
Fair enough, but that brings up a question.
5.0 and 5.8 are closely related, but there is a dimensional variance. Will the 5.0 harness and plumbing fit the 5.8 without modification? Any wires to extend to accommodate the greater width and deck height? How about the air intake plumbing with the MAF sensor?
I have not tried it, so I don't know, but I think it may make the stretch?
