1992 F150 Longbed Rebuild... Soon to be Lightning Clone

Hey Guys,

I have owned this 1992 F150 Single Cab 2wd 300 I6 Automatic for a year now. Since then I have done a lot of work to it. And plan on doing more [Engine Swap??] this spring.

When I got it, it was old, beat, rusted, Maine work truck. My buddy and I got it jumped and drove it home in 30 minutes for $400. The rear tank didn't work, front tank leaked, but other than that it was running good, besides the fact I was 17 years old and I didn't tell my father I bought a project truck...

I didn't do much for a few months, until January rolled around and I had cabin fever. My younger brother and another few buddies started ripping the old bed off... which after 22 New England winters did not want to budge. We managed to do with with a few gallons of PB Blaster.

After we did that I decided that I wanted to build a Longbed Lightning Clone. One step at a time of course. As my parts i ordered came in, and I was slowly putting them on, my friend got a 1995 F150 302 Automatic 2wd Longbed, but it was considered junk because there was not Title of Ownership, the motor was worn out and the cab was totally shot.

We decided my truck needed the better parts so we swapped it out. I pulled the doors the fenders the bumpers the bed and part of the interior and gave him all my old stuff so he could scrap it. (We did this all after school Monday- Thursday while my dad wasn't home so he didn't get angry). And it paid off too. When my unappeased father returned home, his remarks were "Is that the same POS truck?"

With the truck being 4 different colors I needed to get it painted. With my father moving his house back into the one I was living in, we had no garage so I hired my friend to cut out the quarter panels and the fix the cab corners. We painted it a 1992 Chrysler White, but no one could tell unless you put another f150 next to it.

After it was painted I put it all together it was time to have it pass inspection, which it did after a new brake line and ball joints. For getting it insured my father finally liked it. It lowered the families insurance $500 a year. "Sorry Gieco can't even save you that much, better buy a ford." I have been driving it around more and more. I love it. But it is lagging.

The transmission with a healthy 215,000 miles is finally worn out. I have 1st gear and 2nd gear, but it doesn't like to shift up or down from them automaticly.

I have decided after trying to sell a 2wd Truck in winter in Maine that I will hold onto it until the spring and snag up someone's old 302 or 351 powered f150 or f250 that rotted out and swap in the better parts.

If you guys have any suggestions I will be happy to hear!

If you want to see more about my projects I have a cool blog. Larrabee Watercraft

update

I wanted to give you guys a update on my truck. I have gotten a 1995 5.8 351w Bronco Engine. My brother also purchased a 1996 F150 XL 5speed shortbed with a rotted out frame (typical for Maine trucks).

So a few weeks ago i let my friend drive my truck over to a friends barn... and when he pulled in it was steaming and seized. **NEVER LET FRIENDS DRIVE**

So we pulled the engine out and are currently preping it for the new engine. We are leaving the old E4OD in it for right now, and will put the 5 speed from the 1996 later.

Bad tires... taking what I want off it and junking it

A little ATF leaked from the torque converter.

300 I6 out!
