How to Remove Hub Locking Cap?

I have seen pictures of other hub lock cups that have Allen bolts to remove - mine do not have any fasteners - how can they be removed - do the just pry off?

take off the center cap of the wheel that covers the lug nuts. Then you will be able to see the retaining ring tangs sticking out that you need to squeeze together. After you have that out, start wiggling.

Thanks, so will just the center section in the picture come out or will the entire assembly visible in the pic?

OK I made it to the wiggling part - seems pretty stuck in there. Wiggled as hard as I could with bare hands, tapped lightly with a hammer but really seems stuck in there. Advisable to squirt some WD40 in there to loosen things up? Persuade with channel locks?

Ok - got her out - fully disassembled, cleaned and greased. Once fully disassembled, the plastic manual lock on the front would still not turn - seems to be frozen in place and no way to remove - ie ring is stuck on the outside and I disassembled down to the rubber vacuum seal on the inside - assume not a good idea to attempt to remove the seal and see whats underneath... I re-assembled, put her back on the truck and then tried to tap the plastic adjuster but it would not break free - actually cracked it when tapping with a piece of wood and gave up at that point rather than damage it further.
Assuming no way to free the adjuster? My guess is I either go manual or replace the stock hub lock with another used or new unit....
Since stuck in the locked position and the passenger side is free - I assume this will have no effect on my 4WD function other than provide some more drag when in 2WD?

You need to start using the search feature, it's the best part of the forum. There was a thread on removing the dial (revived just last week) and I have posted ways of freeing it.

My advice would be to file them in your nearest refuse container and put a nice set of Warn manuals on there and never service hubs again..

To be fair even the aftermarket hubs need to be pulled to grease the stub shaft every now and then.

Anything mechanical can break.

People don't buy the Warn hubs or the Mile Markers for the bling. They buy them because their OEM's get FUBAR'd because the preventive maintenance on them isn't well known. Once FUBAR'd, they opt for the aftermarket ones since new OEM's are expensive.

But this is nothing new. All of us who talk about these hubs for the people that ask about them already know all this.

Actually that's not true because there are tons of cheap fixable stock hubs out there due to all the people that just threw money at it and also gave up their auto feature to boot..........oh well, more for me if I ever need one.

Come on Stew just admit it
