2004 6.0 Problems

New here but i have been reading thread after thread of great information but with so much information I am stuck as to where to start. Hopefully some of the experts here can give me a path to start down.

I have a 2004 (manufacturer date 08/03) 6.0 with about 250,000 miles on it. Second owner of the truck with the first being a local road construction company. I was told by the mechanic at the dealership when we bought this truck a few years ago that it already had an upgraded ficm unit installed by the dealership.

This is a spare farm truck that started not cranking when the truck was hot but would run fine once it cranked. That was a few months ago. Now it will crank fine but idles high for about 20-30 seconds and then settles back down. It will not build power over about 1600-1800 rpms and is no longer driveable. Harvest is coming to and end so now I have time to dig into and rebuild the truck.

Where would everyone suggest I start troubleshooting. Thanks in Advance.

Look for an exhaust leak at the up pipes and flex joints; broken clamp anywhere exhaust can leak.
Look for turbo issues. CAC boot and tube problems.

I would start there do you have anything to read codes and live data?

Not sure if a diesel would act like a gas engine in this case but once a gas engine leans out too far, that high idle will occur.
If that's indeed true here, looking for a CAC boot leak, etc as noted above, is probably a good place to start.
Really need codes to get better info here.
Those 03's and early 04's have HPOP issues that might help a no start condition too. Any previously known work done on this engine, especially with those many miles?
