Tailgate replacement
After paying a shop over $1000 to paint a good used tailgate (after they quoted me $500) for my f150 I was just wondering how to paint a panel (tailgate) a different colour? Assuming it is in good shape just the wrong colour. I'm sure this would of been a project I could of tacked at home in my shop and saved quite a bit of money. Just not sure if I would of needed to take it down to the bare metal? Or maybe just sand down to the primer? Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thank

Yes, it's not difficult to do at all. Assuming the tailgate is in good condition and has no rust, you don't have to go to bare metal to repaint. If it's going to be a different color, you may be well-advised to prime the tailgate first. I will forewarn you to make sure you use a good paint system. Also, just go to YouTube and watch a ton of painting videos. Last, your shop MUST have a compressor that moves large volumes of air to properly atomize modern paints. If you are in an area that requires water based paint systems, that's an animal of a totally different species. You probably don't have the right equipment in your shop at home to deal with it.
