Hi all. I currently own a '94 Ranger I inherited from my dad quite a few years back. Unfortunately it has a cracked head among other engine related issues. Sitting in the corner of my garage is a "fresh" 2.3 which came out of my '85 Capri. Currently the Ranger is a 4.0 automatic with a good tranny. What (if anything) is necessary to fit the 2.3 to the 4.0 tranny? I've tried to research my query on the internet but seem to find every combination BUT. I know not many would downsize the engine size but this truck is otherwise in such great shape and would like to use it for my 80 mile daily trip to work & back. Admittedly, the 4.0 wasn't really that great with fuel mileage. Thanks in advance. -Alan-
It's carb'd. I know how to switch a system from injection to carb but I'm at a dead end with driveline matching info. I'm an old school kinda guy. Something with a carb and Duraspark is something I am more comfortable working on.
I might be wrong but I think you can swap in a bellhousing from a 2.3 a4ld If you have a 4.0 a4ld but the biggest issue will be with the electronic controls. Ford Ranger Automatic Transmission Identification
This swap isn't going to work, the Briggs&Stratten(2.3L) will not bolt to the 4.0L trans and the bellhousing is not detatchable so you would need another trans. Then you would have to change the head on the 2.3 to an EFI head and find a complete '94 EFI intake, wiring harness, and PCM for it and swap all that in... which may or may not be a simple plug and play operation. You can forget converting the truck to a carb unless you replace the trans with a manual, the auto that is currently in there is controlled by the PCM and it won't work at all without all the EFI engine sensors plugged in and operational. And with all that done you would have a truck that would be so gutless that it can't get out of it's own way.. the old Crapi motor makes a wopping 88hp!! So yes it'll get better fuel milage than the 4.0L but you will absolutely hate driving it.
