I have a 302 with an AOD transmission in my '59. Should I have a tranny cooler on it? I don't know how to tell if I need one or not, or if I should automtically have one with my engine/tranny combo?
Daryl, you don't exactly have to have one, but since your going to be doing some engine mods it wouldn't hurt. Besides it helps your tranny out either way. Just go with whatever B&M has to offer. Hope this helps. -4speed
I concur with Racerchuck heat to a transmission is like the Ex and the present girlfriend or significant other showing up at the same time. It is not good. Many places sell good coolers. They even have ones that will mount to the frame rails. Look at it like this it is easier to replace a faulty cooler than a burnt up transmission both in time and money. Can I get an Amen from anybody who agrees with me.
If I can actually be serious with you for a change;
You've put a fair amount of money into that engine of yours to acheive substantial increases in power output. It is reasonable to expect that you intend to let her wail on occasion. Given that, a trans cooler would be cheap insurance.
Also, if you can afford those fancy-dancy, store-bought heads then you can afford a trans cooler.
(Ouch, not taking a shot at my buddy for a whole paragraph wasn't easy)
If you want a low buck cooler just go to you local wreaking yard and purchase one off a newer ford. I think you should have one. I don't think you want to go through another tranny swap.
WOW! So I'm hearing a resounding, "YES". Even from Fergie!!! Now the obvious question is: which one? what brand? and what specs am I lookng for besides one that attacheds to the frame rail?
thanks gang,
Daryl
51 Dueller is right. The junkyards have plenty of options for tranny coolers. SOme of the smaller cars had remote mounted coolers or auxillary coolers in addition to the one in the radiator especially your bigger trucks that are built for hauling like your F250 and F350 Dually with Powerstrokes. In summation what I am saying is it cheap insurance spoken from some of us who have been burnt, no pun intended, or seen somewhat burnt for not getting "insurance" that a cooler would provide. I have seen them a plenty of shows I am not sure of the quality of their products but there is a place call A Plus Hot Rod shop in Evansville Indiana they have a nice looking functional cooler than is made to be mounted on the frame rails and provide optimal cooling. That is if you are adverse to walking around a junkyard sweating trying to find one that will work. Best wishes with it though
Hey Daryl, I have a used one you can have. It worked great when I took it off. It just needs a new coat of spray paint. Give me the word and it's in the mail to you. John
John,
Word! I'd be happy to take it off your hands. What is it off of? Is it the correct spec's, etc for my application? Will it do the job adequately? (you know, all the "usual" questions!)
Does a tranny cooler rob hp? or affect engine performance/output? I guess I'm curious as to all the pro's and con's of having a tranny cooler on board...
Thanks again John, I really appreciate it...
Daryl
