We are having an issue with the ignition. We have power to the coil and no power coming out. It is a pertronix kit. It ran the last time we started it 5 or so years ago. We have tried 2 different coils both flame thrower II and no dice. We figure the coil is good. Any suggestions?
If I leave my truck with Pertronix Ignitor sit too long, mice nibble through the wires. For some reason, they prefer the insulation that Pertronix has used on the Ignitor.
Which version of the Ignitor do you have? It has to be compatible with the primary resistance of the coil you're using. I believe tne Flamethrower-II is a very low primary resistance coil, and shouldn't be used with an Ignitor-I modules, as it can cause the module to burn up. I believe the later Ignitor-II and Ignitor-III are compatible, though.
The original Ignitor-I modules are also susceptible to burning up if the ignition switch is left ON too long. I think that the Ignitor-II and Ignitor-III are immune to that problem, as well.
The key should not be left on for any extended period, according to Pertronix. I find myself leaving the key on, when working on the engine. Maybe that is what happened.
