Thermostat
Bought this 88 4.9 f150 in February last year and I've been slowly improving it. New plugs, wires, coil, fuel filter, etc but its always ran a bit rough. Couldn't keep the EGR vacuum line plugged in, stumbles a lot, etc. The temp gauge has always read very low but I didn't think much about it ... Most of the other gauges are junk and I had heat last year. This year low heat and lately no heat. Installed a new 195 stat (Dead one was 180) and it's a new truck, no stalling or bucking, even with the EGR plugged in. And the temp gauge works now.

This points out one of my pet peeves. Everyone assumes the stock gauges are junk. (Yes, I do know about the idiot gauge for the oil pressure). Frankly, the quality and construction of the factory gauge is not significantly different than the pricey aftermarket gauges. If your gauge, (any gauge), is reading low, it's trying to tell you something. You don't fix it by replacing the gauge. It was working all along!
Anyways, great story and thanks for posting it.
