Hey everyone.. I have a 1987 f250 supercab longbed with a 460 and 4 speed. Heres my problem.. let me know what you think please. When I let the truck idle, the oil pressure gauge either goes all the way down to 0 (L) and stays there or bounces at 0. It goes up where it should be when I give it more rpms.. But I am concerned because it has never done this before and I don't want to blow my motor, and yes it is full on oil. What should i do? Thank you
I would run an oil pressure test and see if the gauge is accurate . How is your oil and filter condition ? You did not recently change the oil did you .... ?
I agree...I did the mod and it worked for a while till the solder-wire corroded on the back of the cluster were I jumper-ed the resister. It came loose...
I then decided to purchase an A-pillar from Glowshift.com and bought some gauges.
If I were you I would check to see if it's gauge or if it's your sending unit that is bad. There is some information on this forum to help do that.
I think all you do is ground out the wire that goes to your sending unit to the engine block-valve cover bolt or what ever is the nearest ground and turn your key on to see if the gauge needle moves over past the L on your gauge. There is more information on the web to help diagnose that. I don't remember all the details.

It corroded? Did you use acid-core solder by mistake?
Just buy a good aftermarket gauge if you you really want to know its pressure. My gauge was acting funny so I put an autometer oil pressure gauge which has calmed my nerves.

That's the best way. One day I'm gonna do some experimenting and research and find a GOOD, affordable, quality pressure transmitter/transducer that will work with our gauges (and probably most or all Fords of this era) although that will probably require some modifications to the gauge circuitry.
I don't think the gauge itself is all that bad, just the fact that the pressure sensors are complete CRAP! I'm on like my 5th one over the two vehicles I've done the oil gauge mod to.
And yes I said good and affordable in the same sentence, which does not violate the law of Good/Fast/Cheap because I never said this would happen fast LOL.
On that note... how do the Autometer electric sensor hold up? How long have you had it?

Thanks a lot everyone for your replys.. lol I was all worried but it was just the sender.. its fine now but I probably do need to put a real oil pressure gauge in the truck.. I have the SunPro 3 guage set in both of my other trucks and I like them a lot.
