Hi guys. Just got a super clean '79 f-150 and the tailgate cables are too long and it doesn't open level. I see scissor bars listed for the '79 but also hear of the cables. Mine doesn't appear to have a conversion. Was it a mid year change?
Scissors brackets are the norm for 73-79 for sure, cable are not. I think in the mid 80's (1983) they went to cables?? I have never seen a swap to cables on our old trucks. Welcome to FTE and very nice truck on the trailer, for sure.
The factory arms are the way to go. They fold up all on their own.
And if rattling is an issue, then there is an aftermarket kit (like $30) to isolate the hinge point. Also consider adjusting and/or shimming the tailgate bumpers in the gate jamb.
It was in Brewster, Washington a few months ago listed on the Wenachee craigslist.($4800.00)
The guy ahead of me couldn't come up with the cash so I was next. After several pictures of the underside, I realized I had found a "Unicorn". Still, I jumped on the next available flight to Seattle and drove 4 1/2 hrs to see it in person. The next day I towed it 4 1/2 hrs to Bellingham to go on the ferry. Luckily, our summer place was 20 minutes from the truck. A lot of driving but well worth it.
