So there the same except for the head bolt holes right? Also I read somewhere earlier today that if I got gt40 heads I could put the 351 head valve springs on the gt40 heads.. guess there supposed to be stronger with a bigger cam?

The valve spring specifications are based on which cam you want to use, not engine size. I am not aware the Lightnings used different springs versus the Explorer. But I am not expert on the small nuances between those engines. Even if there were I would highly suggest using springs recommended by the camshaft manufacturer.

I understand that the spring specs are for the cam not the engine, that's why I was wondering if you knew if the stock 351w valve springs from the stock heads that I have now could withstand more lift.. I'm looking at one of the comp cam extreme 4x4 cams and I'm probably going to get the 270H and didn't know which springs would work better with the cam

Also is the 270H comp cam xtreme 4x4 any good? Is this the cam you guys would use? Should I go with a smaller one? If so which one?

The springs in stock heads will handle more lift but they are just barely adequate for the stock cam so you definitely should use new/heavier springs for an aftermarket cam. I'd suggest the CL35-235-3 or CL35-239-3, a 351 with GT40 heads will make peak HP somewhere around 4500-5000rpm so there is no need to rev it any higher.

The CL35-239-3 says that it needs machining on the heads.. is this really nessesary? Sorry for all the questions this is my first engine build and I want it to be build right with good parts and I want to know what I'm doing

I don't see how since these parts have absolutely nothing to do with the cylinder heads. Where are you reading that?

That's if you are using the springs that they recommend for use with that cam.

If you want it to last you need to upgrade the springs. Those springs require some minor machining of the spring seats.

Can I do this myself or do I have to take it to a machine shop?

No you cannot do it yourself ...unless you have the proper equipment.

Ok... now would you do all this for this cam or just go with the smaller one and not have to do any machining?
