Get selectable front and rear. Idk if they make electric lockers for the rear or not. That would be my first choice though. Most of the time you would never have to totally lock the front, but it is nice to have if need be.
That's my thought too. I did get stuck a few times.....with and without the trailer on. 50% of the time when i did get stuck i had to be towed. A few of those times ...if i had "real" 4x4 i would have been ok.
I've read that they are extremely tough too!! I read somewhere that the hard core posi units can cause wheel lock up when decelerating on ice. I've never had a posi unit that tight...i guess it could happen
Our 2000 Jeep TJ is used in the mtns of SW Colorado. We installed tru-trac front and rear. They work great, but i don't use 4x4 as often now since the front locker is more often a hindrance than help.
Selectable locker up front is more useful. Having rear locker does cause inside wheel to chirp when turning under power, even in parking lots.
IMO, selectable fr and rear would be the 'money is no issue' answer.
I'm thinking the same. Try this scenario...which happened to me last fall. I'm in Toronto, Canada....towing my 20 trailer with my race bike to Barber in Alabama. We leave home...weather is ok....get south of Lake Erie....we get hit with a major snow storm...they don't plow the highway....we're stuck....so we stay overnight since it was already dark. Next morning....roads are still not plowed and we have to keep moving. ???? Can i lock the rear and drive at highway speeds? Can i lock both and run highway speeds?
Being from Alberta, my answer is no...You want the diffs open on the highway, even in the snow. I had trutacs on an xj and they were awesome on a snowy trail...but gnarly on snow covered highway. I swapped to selectables after a trip to Revelstoke.

Exact same issue with my XJ, great on the trail and a downright handful on the freeway in nasty conditions.
To the OP, with the weight and wheelbase of the Excursion, the abnormal quirks shouldn't be anywhere near as noticeable. A rear locker will do you wonders... I could crawl in all of my wheelers in 2wd with a rear locker where open/open 4wd gave me issues before. Honestly I'd start with just the rear and see how you like it and how well it performs bore dumping money on the front end - especially with a rig that doesn't see trail use. Especially for when towing, since most of the weight will be out back on the rear wheels.
I have ARB's front and rear. No regrets. They got my fat out of the fire more than once while towing my Travel Trailer offroad and they work perfectly. They require more care about the condition of the axle fluid.
I you go ARB, make sure whoever puts them in is knowledgeable and hopefully has done them before in other axles. Not a Job for a yahoo.
