AutoZone carries Airtex FDM's for around $135 with a lifetime warranty. I have two in my truck, one installed last year and the other about 5 weeks ago. Ain't had any trouble with either one, or ANY Airtex pump for that matter.
You reuse your stock hanger and fuel level sensor and splice the wires from the new FDM to the pigtail on the hanger. They provide you with two butt connectors for this purpose but I prefer to solder and shrink the connections.
so im just replacing the pump and thats all? i dropped the front tank this summer to replace the breather tube and that was pretty easy. right now i just keep my eye on the front tank and don't let it get full. as for the starting problem i just use the rear tank so i think for now ill be fine but since winter is here it may be worth the $40 to fix it now. when will i know that it absolutely needs to be replaced?
You have to take the sending unit completely out of the tank to change the pump. The fuel line disconnect's are between the tank and the frame rail on the front tank, and the top of the tank and the bed on the rear. It's a royal pain to do it with the bed on. Just my opinion.
My pump(s) gave me no warning, they just stopped working.
i just look on oreilly and it looks like the unit is $200, did you buy new on ebay for $40 or used?
New pump attached to the old sending unit. and if you take the bed off, remember to unhook the two filler necks! I forgot to mention this in my previous post. I think each of them have three screws that hold them to the side of the bed.

I haven't replaced one (yet), but my understanding is that the FDM will include the pump, the check valve, the fuel level sensor, the pickup tube and sock (I think that's it). While you may be able to get some of the components separately, from what I gather it's generally best to do the whole thing as a unit. If either the pump or the check valve needs to be replaced the other probably isn't far behind.
When does it NEED to be replaced? As kaduh said, if it's the fuel pump that goes it'll just quit, stranding you (except that you can switch to the other tank). If it's the check valve, it'll just be annoying you too much by causing hard starts and by refilling that tank too fast when running on the other tank.
